Dyeapalooza: Dye Sample Hexies

This is an addendum to all the posts from this summer – I have finally finished knitting all the dye samples into hexies. The best way to learn about your handspun is always by using it, so this is the real completion of the dyeing experiments. Rather than amend those colourway posts, I’m going to post all the hexies right here, and you can link back and forth between the individual posts if you’re interested.

These were all knit using the “Skep” pattern by Kate Davies. However, I didn’t have a plan for these samples when I spun them, and they are more fingering than DK weight, and so do not match the neutral framing yarn or the combo spun samples. I was flexible: All of these were knit flat. Many of them were knit inside-out, with my own rethinking of the pattern. They were knit at two different gauges. That’s all I’m comfortable saying without disclosing details of the published pattern.

The below also reflects the final numbering system I landed on for keeping all this stuff organized. That is not reflected in the original posts, and is particularly irritating in the split complement/complement post. If anyone actually cares, I’ll fix it, but I’m guessing you can manage.

Complement

Original post – Please note that for this and all following samples, I spun two samples: one straight off the braid, and one combed to completely blend. These were knit together intarsia-style. Where there was significantly more of one sample than the other, I either changed the ratio of the intarsia, or when I ran out of one, I continued in only the remaining colour.

28. Yellow/Violet – Notable that the blended sample is the most closely coloured sample to the framing taupe yarn.

29. Yellow-Orange/Blue-Violet

30. Orange/Blue

31. Red-Orange/Blue-Green

32. Red/Green – this was the first sample knit, before I landed on intarsia as a better method of combining these into one sample. The combed sample is a small strip along the outside of the combo-spun sample.

33. Red-Violet/Yellow-Green

Warm & Cool

Original post – The samples I spun from these braids were inexplicably small, and one of each was very small. So I elected to knit each pair into a single hexie, changing proportions so each had a clean section.

50-51: Cools

52-53: Warms

51 Hexies, all done! If you made it this far, I hope you enjoyed the pictures. Pretty soon I’ll start a series of posts where I break down all my combo drafts, one at a time, with explanations. This will be a more detailed, more analogue version of what I’ve been going over as a segment in the Wool Circle for the past several months, mostly for my own records and reflections. Cheers!

  1. I’m neither a dyer nor a spinner, but I do love looking at an impressive knitting project. These hexie photos are a pleasure to see!
