Sections of Citrus

Welcome to day 4 of the Migraineur pattern release party! We’re getting so close to release I can smell it. Tomorrow I upload the big file, and Lord willing, firm up the live date. For now, let’s talk about what will be in it! Today will feature one of my more unusual designs, a hat called Hemisphere.

Have you ever had that type of migraine pain where you feel like you can exactly trace one hemisphere of your brain? I imagined drawing that shape on my head, and this is what I came up with.

Hemisphere is knit side-to-side, using short rows to create two halves, with a contrast colour to light up one section. Would you put your section in the same place? Would you make it bigger or smaller? The front and back are the same, so you can switch which side is highlighted depending on how you feel that day.

The hat extends slightly beyond ninety degrees, creating more of a cloche. the smallest short rows tend to make a slightly cat-eared profile that I decided were a feature instead of a bug. The brim is knit last, solidifying the shape with central decreases, and finished (like Spikehands) with a tidy tubular bind off.

I played with colour in this accessory set, going for coordination rather than matching. The light grey-blue of the Smirr colourway of Milarrochy Tweed ties the Patina colourways (above) together, but the other colours are quite different. The Rust set (below) has differences as well, but they’re more subtle. Can you spot them?

I hope both hemispheres of your head are playing nice today. Next time I’ll reveal the centerpiece of this chapter that finishes this set.

Thanks to Deborah Locklear for knitting the Rust sample of Hemisphere, and to Rebekah and Marikah Sanguin for modeling.
