Announcing: An Advent Book-Release Party

Hi everyone. After years of quietly working and hinting, I’m almost ready to actually release my first book of knitting patterns. There will be a lot of info coming out over the next couple of weeks, so I’m gathering it into one place FAQ style to get us started.

What is it? The title is Migraineur: Poems and Patterns on the Experience of Migraine. It contains 12 knitting patterns, each in two colourways, for accessories – shawls, hats, and mitts. It also contains 8 original poems, and is photographed in different seasons of our Arctic landscape. If you’d like to sample the vibes, check out the two free patterns that I published on Knitty because they wouldn’t fit in the book: Incurvatus and Cause and Effect.

Who is it for? Anyone who knits! These patterns range from confident beginner to intermediate level. There is some fair isle colourwork, and a lot of garter stitch. I like to use unusual directions in my designs, but the shawls especially are meant to be possible to knit for long stretches while, well… dealing with a migraine.

What’s the quality? I have endeavored to produce professional-quality designs with this collection. The patterns have been thoroughly test knit, professionally tech edited, and professionally copy edited. I’ve learned so much through this process and am confident in offering a solid collection of patterns that I’m proud of.

What’s the format? Migraineur will be available as an e-book through Ravelry, and as a paperback book through Amazon.

What is the price? Migraineur will be 30$ CAD(~22$ USD). The physical and e-book editions will be the same price. For a limited time only, when the book first launches, you will be able to get the e-book for free with purchase of a physical book – after that point, if you want both, you will have to purchase them separately.

How can I get it? I will be releasing the digital patterns throughout the month of December, and the paperback book will be available by Christmas. Don’t worry; I’ll post all the links! Several times!

yum, yarn.

What’s the yarn? All the patterns are knit with Milarrochy Tweed, which is one of my very most favourite commercial yarns. (I even visited the mill where it’s made last year.) It’s a fingering-weight wool/mohair tweed single that comes in a multitude of colours, nearly all of which are used in this collection!

What about handspun? There’s no handspun in this book, but stay tuned. In the spring, we’ll be exploring how to make some similar yarns on Wool n’ Spinning shows. A KAL/SPAKAL will be announced in the new year when we’re all co-ordinated.

How do I stay informed? Make sure you are subscribed to this blog! I’ve added a Subscribe widget – on mobile, you can find it at the bottom of this post, right below the comments box. If you’re on a computer, it’s at the top of the right sidebar. If you put your email in there, you’ll get all my posts as a newsletter in your inbox!

What can I expect? I’m going to treat December as one big Advent book release party, announcing a new pattern every few days and adding it to the e-book. Think of it as like an every-other-day Advent calendar that comes to your inbox, with lots of insights into my inspiration and design process. Pretty soon I’ll have more solid information on ordering, with detailed instructions on how and when you can sign up for the e-book, and how (for a limited time only) you will be able to get your e-book for free if you order the physical book!

I’m definitely chomping at the bit to get this book out into the world, and to shout about all the cool people who have helped me bring this project to fruition. Please do subscribe to hear about the latest. See you sooooon!
