Making WAVES: Yarn and Cast-On

Are you making WAVES yet? Our little knit-along for Migraineur is slowly picking up steam, and a few of you lovelies are messaging me or posting in the Ravelry group about your plans and starts. Of course, you don’t have to knit Waves, that’s just what I’m making! As for me, I’ve finished the main colour yarn I’ll be using for Waves.

I made these singles out of big ol’ rolags that came off my blending board. As part of Dionne’s spinDecember effort, I made them out of all the bits and bobs of leftovers that I had hanging about from different projects. There’s lots of abandoned leftover felting fiber in there, some combing waste from a Gotland/Romney fleece, some silk, and some cotton. I sort of thought they would blend together into more of a tweed, but this is… something else. I laughingly labeled it “Christmas Dust Bunnies,” or perhaps Moth Wings.

With all those different fibers in there, I fully embrace that this is a very textured yarn. But it’s close enough to Milarrochy Tweed that I was happy to use them together. Unable to decide on which contrast colour to use, I’m going to use all four of these!

I used the schematic in the pattern as a sort of mental colouring page. I’ll do each section in a different contrast colour, just sort of as I feel like.

The process of working from my own pattern is extremely humbling. I almost immediately found errors that needed fixing, despite going over it with a fine-toothed comb an uncountable number of times, and hiring a test knitter and tech editor. There’s just no substitute for manually knitting through the pattern, and getting many more eyes on it. I finished sending out the current batch of errata today. I know there will be more; it’s just part of the process. I appreciate everyone who has come forward with mistakes they’ve found, or sometimes just ideas to make the pattern clearer. It feels like calling everyone’s attention to the fact that my pants are down, but it is in all ways worth it to give as many knitters the best possible knitting experience.

One more observation for these early rows. I realized, while taking these pictures, that my yarn is neither Moth Wings nor Dust Bunnies – it’s an exact match to the cover of my book. All those mixed up earthy colours, along with grey of every value, looks a lot like the tundra on the cover. With the shots of yellow, it’s undeniable, and really makes me laugh. This could not have been more perfect or less planned.

It may be blizzarding outside here, but I soldier onward and outward, through the WAVES.
