Naturally Hand-Dyed and Recycled Yarns
Why do you knit? For sanity? For creativity? For escape? For meditation? One of the reasons knitting has become such a precious pastime to me is that, in our world of pre-packaged goods and endless consumer choices, making one’s own clothes is a little more human. It brings one a little closer to the earth.
OFS yarns bring the knitter one step closer to the earth. Instead of using acid dyes, each skein of yarn is dyed with a material you can pronounce. Using grocery items like black beans, or wild-harvested materials like pokeberries, our palette is limited only by nature and our imaginations.
Care and Use: Our natural colors are tested for colorfastness, so with proper care, there is no reason these colors should not last a lifetime. However, all these yarns should be handwashed, and they should not be left in direct sunlight. Treat your hand-knits like you would treat an heirloom piece of furniture.
And now, the yarns (click on the title or the picture to see the full color selection and available inventory. With the exception of the recycled and discontinued yarns, custom dyelots can be ordered by emailing Rebecca):

Our latest addition is a heavy worsted/aran weight yarn, a 50/50 blend of merino wool and tencel. It has a beautiful silky sheen and depth of color.
This worsted-weight yarn is a 50/50 wool/alpaca blend. The wool keeps the yarn bouncy and gives it good memory, while the alpaca lends softness and drape.
This fingering weight yarn comes in a variety of semi-solids. Its springy two-ply construction makes it appropriate for shawls, socks, and other fine work.
This sturdy fingering-weight is made for rough wear, but dyed for beauty.
These yarns are truly one-of-a-kind. They are recycled from old sweaters, then overdyed with natural dyes. The recycled fiber gives the hand-knitter access to luxury blends available nowhere else.
These generous skeins are the same as other OFS colors, but dyed on a base that has been discontinued. Limited quantities are available.
