When you make a wildly multi-colored project, like the Lenten KAL, often you end up with lots of leftovers. I always think about how fun it would be to come up with a leftovers project, but rarely do I come up with anything good. But this time, I had some inspiration. Every Sunday morning, when I go to church, I spend half the service staring at the beautiful window behind the organ.

Every week, since we’ve started attending this little church, I thought to myself, “Gee. That would make such a great hat!” When I realized that the KAL had all the colors I would need, I was sold. (In the interim, the “Rose of Edgeworth” hat pattern was born from this same window, though rather more subtly.) This was the first project on my needles after my Lenten fast, and now at long last it has been test-knit and is ready to share:

This is much easier than it looks. The Fair Isle is all two-color; the additional details are added at the end with duplicate stitch. Most of the floats are less than five stitches, making it very fun fair-isle and a quick little knit. (Wondering if you can make this with your leftovers? You need the most brown: about 66 yards of DK, or .6 oz if you’re using Felted Tweed. The other amounts are fairly nominal, not more than 22 yards max. If you used fingering weight, you make it a child’s hat!)
